Parra depicts quiet chaos by the sea.
LOST KEYS is a nostalgic snapshot, paying homage to the playful beach scenes painted by Parra’s father in the 90s. Surrounded by sand dunes, three expressive women gesture as one appears to drop something. When creating the composition, Parra drew upon his personal life in Amsterdam, from the nearby sandy hills that he often cycles through to the title of a song by his band.
Parra’s sophisticated use of colour includes many colours that sit next to each other on the colour wheel. This provided a challenge to the printmakers, requiring many rounds to perfect the colour inks for the silkscreen print. Printed in a painterly fashion, light colours are layered over dark colours to foreground the figures.
Parra3 collaborationsParra’s paintings capture moments of spontaneity, awkwardness and melancholy. The female form serves as the main protagonist in many of his works, along with themes of intimacy and domesticity. His works always start with the composition, like a jigsaw puzzle. Parra sketches fast in pen and paper, then onto an iPad, before painting onto canvas. The palette is strictly flat pinks, reds, blues and blacks. With their contrasting colours, his bright graphic works recall Neo-Pop artists like Gary Hume and Katharina Fritsch.
