In Magical Thinking (Large), Grayson Perry channels the whimsical charm of a Russian lubok print at vast scale.

The idea for Magical Thinking (Large) was sparked when Grayson encountered Cornelius de Vos’ Portrait of a Lady at the Wallace Collection in London. Here, he reimagines de Vos’ subject, encircling her with a constellation of words and symbols. The graphic composition draws inspiration from a 17th-century print style that pairs vivid illustration with narratives derived from literature, religious stories and folk tales.

To create the edition, printers at Make-Ready developed a bespoke textured paper that "fights back" against the ink. The result is a uniquely tactile silkscreen with intentional irregularities – a homage to the perfectly imperfect nature of woodblock prints.

There's something about printmaking at a large scale that fundamentally changes the way the viewer engages and interacts with the artwork. Instead of you sharing a common space, it envelops you and clears all distractions.
