A pair of prints by Keita Morimoto paint Tokyo as a portal to another world.

Evening Embers depicts a scene from the artist’s studio neighbourhood in Tokyo, its geometric forms inspired by Japanese kanban architecture. Jewel Box portrays a woman standing before a glowing glass cabinet outside a Tokyo restaurant. In both works, the softly illuminated window – a quintessential motif in Keita’s practice – becomes a portal between worlds, nodding to the pre-modernist idea that a painting is itself a ‘window’ into another space.

Each edition features silkscreen-printed gold shimmer details in the glowing areas, creating a luminous, transportive atmosphere that contrasts with the surrounding soft matte textures.

Go behind the scenes

Our master printmaker Tom Murphy discusses the craft and process behind translating the transportive power of Keita Morimoto's work into two shimmering editions.
Abstract painting with warm tones depicting wine bottles and glasses on a table, blending geometric shapes and soft lighting.
An image of artist Keita Morimoto, stood in front of one of his paintings – the image is in black and white.
Keita Morimoto3 collaborationsKeita Morimoto transforms urban streets into rich, cinematic backdrops. His paintings, in oil and acrylic on canvas, show his mastery of artificial light. Borrowing techniques from Baroque painters, Morimoto’s subjects pose under dramatic spotlights – a twist on Rembrandt's contrasting use of light and shadow. Yet, the soft focus on the central figures give the paintings the atmospheric haze of a video game. Combined with hyperrealist figuration, the result is uncanny – like snapshots from a parallel universe almost identical to our own.
