Gisela McDaniel redresses portraiture traditions with luminous paintings that foreground overlooked voices and provide sites for collective healing.

Are you watching?, a self portrait, layers an archival pigment print with 4 silkscreen layers and raised varnish details. Drawing on techniques and materials used throughout the artist’s practice, each print will be embellished by hand with shells, beads and neon pink acrylic paint.

“When I’m doing self portraiture, it’s a moment to check in with myself. Sometimes I’m also able to talk about things that I wouldn’t with somebody else’s painting – I have a little more leeway to tell my own story.”

Similarly to the artist’s original canvases, each print is accompanied by an audio work – in this case accessed via a QR code printed on the accompanying certificate of authenticity.

Inner Visions
McDaniel’s prints will be released alongside hand-finished editions by Khari Turner and Patrick Quarm in the third instalment of curator Larry Ossei-Mensah’s series, Inner Visions.

Framing

Prints arrive float-mounted in a solid wood frame, white-washed with visible grain and fitted with UV plexiglass for protection.

Medium

Archival pigment print on 310gsm Photorag paper with 4 neon silkscreen layers and bespoke, high-build varnish details. Each print is uniquely hand-finished by the artist using acrylic paint, shells and beads.

Certificate of Authenticity

Arrives with a certificate of authenticity.

Finishing

Individually signed and numbered by the artist. Accompanying audio work linked from COA.

Gisela McDaniel1 collaborationGisela McDaniel’s lush, celebratory portraits are platforms for healing that cherish community voices. As a person of indigenous Chamorro descent and a survivor of sexual assault, lived experience is at the heart of the artist’s creative philosophy. She primarily paints women of colour, non-binary people of colour and survivors of sexual violence. Sourced by word of mouth, each model has control over their representation, from settings and poses to the inclusion of personal possessions. Thus, the act of painting becomes a transfer of power back to historically oppressed individuals. Dense layers of paint and pigment create the vibrant scenes, in which smoothly blended gradients contrast thick, sculptural masses of paint. Careful attention to colour and depth sees figures illuminated in warm, homely lighting – cosily enveloped by their surroundings.
