Kitchen Table Series is really about unpacking relationships, about unpacking monogamy, the difficulty of monogamy, the trumped-upness of monogamy, this sort of ideal that never seems to pan out.

Carrie Mae Weems opens her historic Kitchen Table Series with a staged photograph of love and desire.
In 1990, Carrie Mae Weems took 20 black-and-white images at her kitchen table, a traditionally female space that has not been celebrated enough in art. The overhead bulb sets the stage in each photograph, where a host of intimate domestic scenes and social dynamics unfold.
In Untitled (Man & Mirror), Carrie looks directly into the lens as her lover’s body embraces her from above. In an accompanying text from the original installation, the artist writes: "A thin line of difference was beginning to show itself, but they didn't want to lose this dream, so kept at it. Plus the loving was worth it."
Seamlessly threading together the personal and political, this limited edition print is a testament to the artist's monumental legacy.
