Our debut collaboration with influential Saudi artist Ahmed Mater channels the magnetic force of Mecca.

Magnetism 25 reflects the artist’s deep understanding of science and spirituality, drawing from his background as a trained doctor turned contemporary artist. Part of an ongoing series first shown at the 2009 Venice Biennale, the installation places two magnets in opposition to one another: one visibly positioned at the centre, the other hidden below the surface. Together, they exert both attractive and repulsive forces on the surrounding iron filings and create a swirling magnetic field. While the work is deeply rooted in the artist’s cultural and religious background, it is made using a universal scientific principle. The tension between attraction and repulsion serves as a metaphor for tradition and progress, collectivism and personal space.

The edition came to life through innovative printing techniques and is our most complex textured archival print to date. It features a meticulous pigment process where the central cube is raised 9.5mm, allowing collectors to experience both the visual and tactile dimensions of this emotive ode to collective devotion.

The making of Magnetism 25

Translating Magnetism 25 into print was a meticulous process of craftsmanship and precision. Led by printmaker Anastasia Vavilova at Make-Ready, the edition came to life through complex artworking and printing techniques.

The print itself is highly textured. At its core, the central piece was made from 258 passes of archival pigment ink, each layer adding weight and presence until the cube stood almost sculptural, casting shadows that shift with the light.

Translating Ahmed Mater’s artwork to print began with careful artworking to map out its textural elements.

A total of 25 layers of archival pigment ink were layered to create the composition.

At its centre, the core was formed from 258 layers of texture. The result achieves a rich, sculptural effect.

In collaboration with Ahmed, we meticulously perfected the gradient for the surrounding details, which represent the iron filings. These elements were printed with 25 layers of ink, enhancing their depth and intensity to achieve a 3D effect.
