Bio
Ahmed Mater (born 1979) is a pioneering artist widely recognised as one of the most important voices in contemporary Saudi Arabia.
After training as a doctor, he began using discarded X-rays from the local hospital to create photographs – “I learned photography through the X-ray.” His life and work have been shaped by the social transformations unfolding around him – pivotal experiences that continue to inform his practice. Working across photography, film, sculpture, and text, alongside painting and calligraphy, Ahmed documents and reflects on the rapid changes within Saudi society.
