Robert Longo drops the curtain on the American dream.

The stars and stripes of the American flag have appeared in Robert’s work throughout his career, taking on different meanings with each iteration. This new edition is taken from his recent exploration of democracy and power. For Robert, Untitled (Falling Flag) is about “revealing a void – it’s a curtain falling, and nothing exists beyond.”

The flag itself takes up less than half of the image. The rest of the print is an intense black that represents the imposing “void”. To achieve this solid colour in his original drawing, Robert built up layer upon layer of charcoal on white paper. This process is mirrored in the silkscreen process, which included grayscale separation across 9 colours. This allows the complexity of the dark charcoal in Robert’s original to come to life with a hyper-realistic grain texture.

I’m influenced by the image storm that surrounds us. The amount of images that inundates us daily has required me to navigate images with more intention. The motifs I’ve been focused on lately are war, the American dream, power, and protest. My hope is that I can motivate people to keep engaging, keep mobilizing during a time of crushing uncertainty. Ultimately, I have a desire to share how I see the world.

Robert Longo2 collaborationsRobert Longo’s drawings bring us closer to the images that haunt our collective unconscious. Ironically, his ‘Men in the Cities’ (1979-1983) series has achieved exactly that. The images of contorted bodies in "urban uniforms and Film Noir attire" have ricocheted through culture for decades, finding unsettling parallels in reality. At the core of Robert’s practice is an inquiry into how images become symbols – taking on political, cultural, and metaphysical significance in the social imaginary. Each series interrogates a specific theme or visual motif, such as waves crashing (Monsters, 2000-2021), places of worship (God Machines, 2009-2011), and the American flag (Protocol Verso, 2011-2018).
