In his Hong Kong workshop, Johnson Tsang preserves surreal fantasies and lucid dreams in masterfully-sculpted porcelain. The serene, plump face of our third collaboration, which also functions as a plant pot, calls to mind that of a young child.

The edition embodies a message from Tsang to his former self, a heartfelt thank you for the courage required to pursue life as an artist and retain an imaginative outlook. “I want to tell you that you are a great man to me. You opened up your mind, listened to our inner voice and invited me to join you. You taught me that life can be like this.”

Dimensions listed below reference the ceramic sculpture. The interior diameter of the plant pot is 21cm. When placed on the wooden stand, the artwork’s total height is 49cm.

Medium

Ceramic plant pot with glazed interior and bespoke walnut wood stand.

Behind the scenes

Johnson Tsang looking towards the camera with several of his sculpted heads behind him

Johnson Tsang12 collaborationsJohnson Tsang’s surreal porcelain sculptures balance illusionary compositions with hyperreal aesthetics. Despite their delicate craftsmanship, they depict grotesque scenarios: a human face twisted like a wet towel; a fed-up newborn trapped inside a birdcage; or stacks of human heads squashed inside glass cabinets. Half cherub, half Buddha, the artist’s bulbous figures have an amusing fleshiness. While Tsang’s work recalls aesthetics from across art history, such as Chinese ceramics and Neo-classical sculpture, the self-taught artist predominantly draws from personal experience and his intense, bizarre dreams. In his waking life these are given in physical existence via his art.
