Roby Dwi Antono proffers a darkly endearing, emotionally-charged take on surreal figuration.

"Serenity and balance can be seen in the regularity of our heartbeats and breathing. Tenderness and compassion keep us in harmony with the rhythms of human life."

BIAS, a new print edition, centres on one of his distinctive, wide-eyed subjects. Each monochromatic screenprint has been embellished by hand with a series of smaller creatures, rendered in colourful oil pastel – drawing together two distinct stylistic threads from the artist’s burgeoning oeuvre for the first time.

Bespoke frames in a selection of painted wooden hues compliment the unique character of each work. Please note that works from the edition will be randomly assigned.

Framing

Prints arrive float-mounted in wooden frames fitted with UV plexiglass for protection. Each frame is painted in a muted hue, carefully chosen to compliment the colour featured most prominently within the print’s hand-finished elements.

Medium

17 colour screenprint on Somerset Tub Sized 410gsm paper, individually hand-finished by the artist in oil pastel.

Certificate of Authenticity

Arrives with a certificate of authenticity.

Roby Dwi Antono12 collaborationsIndonesian artist Roby Dwi Antono is best known for his surreal and macabre portraits of manga-esque, wide-eyed children. Inspired by many pools of art history from the Renaissance to Superflat, he creates pictures that feel like a children's storybook or dark fairytale – cute and enticing, weird and grotesque. As a kid, Roby's father was a blacksmith, and he would often draw with charcoal outside his father's studio, copying characters from manga, film and TV. This animation style carried over into his adult paintings, which propelled him onto the international art scene in the mid-2010s. But as Roby has matured as an artist, he's strived more and more to uncover the spirit of his inner child. Over time, his brushstrokes have loosened and become more colourful and expressive: "recalling my childhood memories, when I just drew using my hand freely without thinking about art rules, style, or anything else."
