Ai Weiwei brings together two of his most recognisable motifs for the first time in a new limited edition sculpture.
The middle finger began with Study of Perspective, the photographic series Weiwei started in 1995 at Tiananmen Square and has since repeated before the world's centres of power, from the White House to the Eiffel Tower. Toy bricks are another key motif in his work, used in portraits of political prisoners and large-scale pieces such as The Mueller Report. Here, the two combine in a single edition: the middle finger, Weiwei's gesture of defiance towards power, and the brick, the material through which he has repeatedly addressed free expression.
Each sculpture is hand-built using WOMA bricks in discontinued colours, specially produced for this project. Weiwei's signature is engraved onto one brick in every sculpture, and the proof has been approved by the artist.
