Ai Weiwei transforms the humble bicycle into a new limited edition silkscreen print adorned with precious metal leaf.

Throughout his career, Ai Weiwei has used the bicycle as a symbolic motif to explore cultural memory and social change – most prominently in his installation series Forever Bicycles, where thousands of bikes are assembled into towering monuments. Forever Bicycle (Blue & Silver) translates the abstract visual language of these seminal sculptures into a hypnotic two-dimensional form. The edition invites collectors to reflect on themes of mobility, freedom, and the era of rapid modernisation that has reshaped our global economic and social landscape.

Produced in close collaboration with the artist by printmakers at our specialist London print studio, Make-Ready, this limited edition print is finished with hand-applied silver leaf.

Made by hand, these silkscreen prints bring fresh imagery of the bicycle which is very beautiful. The level of quality Avant Arte prints have is rare.

Go behind the scenes

Our master printmaker, Tom Murphy, explains the vision and process behind translating Weiwei's bicycle sculptures into two editions hand-finished with precious metal leaf.

Ai Weiwei27 collaborationsAi Weiwei is unafraid to speak truth to power. He’s one of the most famous living artists today – a testament to the breadth and vision of his practice. Effortlessly, he moves between different media, from sculpture and architecture to performance and documentary film. His work is often monumental in scale and is driven by a hunger for truth and justice. In 2008, for example, Ai spent many months collecting the names of over 5000 children who lost their lives in the Sichuan earthquake. This unflinching dedication to human rights saw him detained by the Chinese government for 81 days in 2011, accused of ‘subverting the state.’
