Abdulnasser Gharem's new limited edition print explores the dual nature of faith and conflict within the Islamic world.
Hemisphere takes its name from the brain's two hemispheres, using this as a metaphor for the shifting relationship between Islamic tradition and contemporary cultural identity. The work presents a central dome split into two halves: one side in the green of the Prophet Muhammad's Mosque in Medina, representing the peaceful heart of Islam, and the other modelled on an ancient warrior's helmet, representing how religion can be misinterpreted for political ends.
Gharem first created the composition as a painting in 2013, using a stamp technique inspired by traditional Islamic interior design, before reimagining it as a sculpture in 2017. The painting has been exhibited worldwide, with major exhibitions at LACMA and the Station Museum of Modern Art. The painting and sculpture have also been exhibited together at the Sharjah Art Museum.
This 24 colour limited edition silkscreen carefully preserves the intricate detail and patterning of the original painting.
