Afro Painter

Edition of 4570.0 (H) × 54.3 (W) cmShipping est. 2 weeks

Afro Painter is an abstract rebellion against conformity.

Based on an original work from Jansen’s anonymous Faceless series (2012), the edition challenges idealised stereotypes in painting and traditional portraiture. The portrait, influenced by his younger self, encapsulates the painter's inner battle. The subject is broken down into abstract parts which call for rebuilding, reflective of the artist’s personal journey as an artist in solitude with PTSD. Strong parallels can be drawn between the edition and works by German interwar artists such as Otto Dix and George Grosz; creating works as radical in their sociopolitical commentary as they are in style.

Marcus Jansen1 collaborationToday, Marcus Jansen is considered a leading painter of his generation. His canvases are epic, apocalyptic and gorgeously expressive. But back in 1990, art was the last thing on his mind. Instead, he was fighting as an American soldier in the Gulf War. In 1997, he left the military and was diagnosed with PTSD. Enrolling on an art therapy course, Jansen unearthed his raw talent and passion for painting. "After seeing the war’s destruction, I instantly questioned the political and human motivations for why we do what we do”, he says. “I’ve said in prior interviews that [art] has saved my life and I’ve always meant that quite literally”.
