Traditional Chinese techniques meet modern-day anxieties in Johnson Tsang’s uncanny wall hanging Searching for Spring.

Tsang reminds us that we should simply do our best instead of tearing ourselves up in the pursuit of the good things in life. Spring symbolises the chance for a break after the hardship of winter.

“If we have faith and positivity through the bad times, the good times will finally come afterwards.”

Behind the scenes

Johnson Tsang looking towards the camera with several of his sculpted heads behind him

Johnson Tsang12 collaborationsJohnson Tsang’s surreal porcelain sculptures balance illusionary compositions with hyperreal aesthetics. Despite their delicate craftsmanship, they depict grotesque scenarios: a human face twisted like a wet towel; a fed-up newborn trapped inside a birdcage; or stacks of human heads squashed inside glass cabinets. Half cherub, half Buddha, the artist’s bulbous figures have an amusing fleshiness. While Tsang’s work recalls aesthetics from across art history, such as Chinese ceramics and Neo-classical sculpture, the self-taught artist predominantly draws from personal experience and his intense, bizarre dreams. In his waking life these are given in physical existence via his art.

Absolutely gorgeous! I have admired Danielle McKinney's work and Shelter is exceptionally beautiful. The colors, the texture - I was delighted when I opened the box. The frame and floating presentation is also perfectly matched to the beauty of the piece. Also, well done on the shipping - it came thoroughly protected. Thank you!
