In Earnest, Rooo Lou tests the limits of recognition.

Lou’s distinct visual language leaves our imagination to fill in the gaps of his portraits. Earnest is an ode to a friend of the artist, who’s defining characteristic is sincerity. Strong black linework is offset by a vibrant palette, a result of his process blending digital and traditional painting techniques. A pair of dots punctuate an otherwise featureless face. When viewed closer, subtle textural complexity is revealed, imbuing a sense of familiarity.

‘Most of my paintings are facetious. This time, I painted this figure while thinking of an important friend of mine whom I respect very much.'

Rooo Lou1 collaborationRooo Lou paints evocative portraits with minimal detail. His figures have no facial features, only dots for eyes to create surprisingly poignant stares. Lou always begins by drawing digitally – a natural impulse given his graphic design roots. After creating thick black outlines, he fills in shapes with colour. The background comes first, and the palette is then decided around that. For texture, he moves from screen to canvas, using acrylics and keeping his brushstrokes visible. The cartoon-like nature of his work is reminiscent of Pop Art.
