Memories ebb and flow through Khari Turner’s canvases, which he creates using water sourced from locations of personal and historic significance.

Based on an original painting, Rest and Wellness partially abstracts a familiar moment of relaxation. In search of a “sandalwood and lavender candle kind of vibe,” each print has been hand-finished by the artist with sand, paint, strips of African mahogany, expressive charcoal strokes and wax pastel details in a variety of hues.

Inner Visions
Turner’s prints will be released alongside hand-finished editions by Gisela McDaniel and Patrick Quarm in the third instalment of curator Larry Ossei-Mensah’s series, Inner Visions.

Framing

Prints arrive float-mounted in a white-washed maple wood frame fitted with UV plexiglass for protection.

Medium

12-colour screenprint, uniquely hand-finished by the artist with charcoal, wax pastels, wood veneer and paint mixed with sand.

Arrives with a certificate of authenticity.

Finishing

Individually signed and numbered by the artist.

Khari Turner1 collaborationKhari Turner’s impressionistic paintings set their obscured Black subjects adrift in waves of memory. Water is a major source of inspiration, especially its relationship to the African American experience: recalling the transatlantic slave trade, racially segregated swimming pools of the mid-20th century and the artist’s own childhood on the shores of Lake Michigan. It is depicted stylistically through textured drips and swirls of colour, but also present physically - Turner mixes water collected from places of personal and historical significance into his pigments. The sodium levels of different water sources react with the paints, resulting in the unpredictable veins, splotches and residues that punctuate his canvases. Through both medium and subject, Turner’s paintings channel the churning chaos and gentle grace of oceans, rivers and lakes.
