Reclining Carrot

Edition of 2011.7 (H) × 40.1 (W) × 14.3 (D) cmShipping est. 2 weeks

Hein Koh critiques societal scrutiny with a satirical twist in anthropomorphic sculpture, Reclining Carrot.

Sporting thigh-scraping boots and matching gloves, the carrot’s nonchalant demeanour is completed by a slim cigarette held between plump, rouged lips. Behind a glamorous facade, the sculpture’s overt sexualisation calls out the unrealistic expectations faced by women in everyday life. In tandem with these serious concerns, Koh revels in the distinctive sense of humour which guides the absurd narratives found throughout her plant-based practice.

“I want the work to speak to all the pressures that women are under: to be perfect, to be attractive, to be good moms. I want people to look at my work and think ‘Oh, I’ve been there before.’”

Behind the scenes

Hein Koh2 collaborationsHein Koh’s sculptures and paintings are as whimsical as they are witty - raising social commentary through a cast of anthropomorphic fruit and veg. Playing on the idea that parents chide children to ‘eat their vegetables,’ Koh’s sarcasm-suffused characters are far from symbols of healthy living. Broccoli, carrots, watermelons and a host of other foods are depicted crying, smoking and drinking to explore mental health in modern society. Themes of childhood and innocence are heightened by the cartoonish aesthetic, while bright colour palettes draw inspiration from the artist’s experience as a mother. Materials like spandex, glitter and vinyl are used to create soft sculptures with an enticing sense of fleshy plasticity.
