Marina Abramović pays homage to opera legend and idol Maria Callas in a new limited edition signed print.

Recalling the first time she heard Maria Callas from her grandmother's kitchen in Belgrade, Marina told us that "from the radio came this incredible voice just singing. I listened and started uncontrollably crying. It was such incredible sadness, such incredible passion. And I wanted to know everything. Who is this Maria Callas?"

Since then, the Serbian performance artist has dedicated a significant portion of her work to the singer, most notably her ambitious project 7 Deaths of Maria Callas – an opera that premiered at Munich's Bayerische Staatsoper in 2020. The opera recalls seven deaths from the singer's most celebrated roles, concluding with her own death from heartbreak in 1977 – a finale that Abramović herself performs on stage.

This limited edition print, translating a black and white photograph of Abramović holding a picture of Callas aligned with her own profile, features a matte varnish seal, created in close collaboration with the artist at our fine art London print studio, Make-Ready.
