Antony Micallef pushes the boundaries of printmaking with a tactile portrait.

Self Portrait with Yellow Lake and Magenta translates the artist’s unique oil painting techniques into an intricate limited edition print. Although Antony created the original 2024 artwork with a mirror, he considers this piece a broader study of human emotion rather than a traditional self-portrait.

This innovative print was created through a close and experimental collaboration between the artist and our expert printmakers at Make-Ready. It required multiple stages to achieve sculptural depth, with the thickest areas receiving up to fifty-seven layers of ink. Selected elements were then varnished to enrich the colours, and the entire piece was mounted on the Heritage Conservation Board.

I wanted to create something that felt more than just a print. I wanted to make something visceral that had all the feeling of the original, but felt like it had all its own agency. I chose this piece of of work as I see it as one of my most successful pieces in this genre. Sometimes when you are working, a painting hits all the right notes and “lands” in the right place. I have such a chaotic way of working, paintings like this probably materialise on their own once every three years.

The making of Self Portrait with Yellow Lake and Magenta

Translating Self Portrait with Yellow Lake and Magenta into print was a meticulous process rooted in craftsmanship and precision. Led by specialist fine art printmaker Anastasia at Make-Ready, the edition took shape using innovative digital techniques that honoured the original work’s rich texture.

Ahead of the launch, we spent a day with the artist to explore his painting practice and understand how his vision was translated into print.
